【IR】Mangrove Cutting & Care Vol.2 (feat. @Inland_Reef)
There are a lot of great videos out on how to grow a Red Mangrove in your reef tank, so what happens once you have had success? How do you trim, wire the growing mangrove tree? How do you provide the nutrients that the mangrove needs? And how do you dose the missing nutrients? In this video I had the pleasure to pick the brain of Tyler @inland_reef on all these questions and more!

Vic from World Wide Corals stopped by for a visit last month (video on WWC: ruclips.net/video/sC81xc3SGUg/видео.htmlsi=twIRb622zo_QpdVY), while here, I asked him to please share some advice on what he would do if this was his tank. Thankfully, he did not say, "start over!" In the second part of the video, I shared why I chose to try the new AccuraSea1 salt from Two Little Fishies, as well as th...
I bought a $100+ Damselfish... 🤑 (Starcki Damsel)

This is a rare case of jumping onto something that I was in the know. Usually hobbyists balk at paying more than $10 for a damselfish, let alone $40. But when a Starcki Damselfish suddenly showed up on my local reef club's forum, I immediately contacted the seller for pick-up. Here is the story... Why/How I'm catching my Melanurus Wrasse! (CAUGHT!)
Просмотров 19 тыс.4 месяца назад
Melanurus Wrasse, usually a fantastic utility fish in most reef aquarium unfortunately is being rehomed in my case, due to a very specific set of circumstance. I am currently battling Aiptasia (and Asterina Starfish, to a lesser extend); Aiptasia Eating Filefish has not yielded any result, nor has F-Aiptasia provided any long-term win. As a result, I will try my hands on the Berghia Nudibranch ...
BEST NPS Tank I have ever seen!! (Sunshine Aquarium @ Tokyo, Japan)

As a part of my Taiwan Japan adventure, we visited the Sunshine Aquarium located in Tokyo, Japan. It was a very, very crowded day but the aquarium surprised me with the amounts and range of exhibits. In particular, there is a super impressive Non-Photosynthetic Corals (NPS) Reef Tank that really caught my eyes. Fish-wise, it featured the beloved Pinecone Fish, Flashlight Fish as well as a few o...

The 17g Mangrove Tank has always been a super low-maintenance tank. Throughout the years it has evolved from a macro algae system, to a soft coral system, to now more of a mixed reef with the focus really being put on the mangrove. In this video I will give a long overdue update on this tank, as well as it's newest inhabitant... Azure Damselfish. Products used in this video: Nice little autofee...

Budget Reefing: Cheap Kalkwasser, Nitrate dosing, CO2 Scrubber media!!
"Thats actually not bad" would be a great T-shirt 😂😂😅
Honestly I was thinking you didn’t have nearly enough fish. lol. My 220 has a ton of fish and they all seem super happy. Just make sure you feed them often. Bioload should be able to be controlled by increasing light time on the chaeto and skimmer time? I suppose I use a filter roller and that strips a ton of nutrients out of the water so my nutrients are always low. But I also had to rehome my blue hippo because she was eating my torches.
Classic...I was watching you about to cut it cringing hoping you would notice but then... snip...Looks heaps better now anyway, got to keep them short and stocky.Look at WWC mangrove, pretty much a topiarized ball. Best looking mangrove i have seen.
I think you are either going to get a larger tank, or dedicate that tank solely to the mangrove, and animals that live in that ecosystem. As I think you have to competing ecosystems in that 17 gallon, each with different needs, that may not be able to be met in such a small space.
You stull runnin the bucket???
Very cool video. fiy: it's pronounced bone-sigh, not bon-zi
AWesome! To be honest, the shorter you can cut the branches the better the tree will look, EVentually. Bonsai is a long game. I let my trees extend 8-9 leaves and then I cut back to the first leaf, shortening the branch drastically. Think at least 5 years into future. It was a good cut, trust me! This technique is called clip-and-grow. Takes longer than wiring but yields much better and natural looking results.
Awesome plants!!
Did you ever find that OG bounce in your tank?
Oh don't feel bad about that cut on a tree. Bonsai people often make accidental cuts that take off unintended branches, and sometimes even snap branches and trunks while bending them. If your tree is healthy, and you haven't done something that the physiology of that tree can't deal with (like cut behind all the living foliage of a branch for some species), it will be fine. Haven't grown mangroves before myself, but what you've done doesn't appear seriously damaging in any way. Remember, they live in places with cyclones/hurricanes/typhoons and evolved to take all that force head on, with nothing else sheltering them. Losing a branch here and there isn't a massive drama.
You make a very good point about mangrove probably get it way worse in nature...! So far the mangrove is carrying on as-if nothing has every happened, I am ready to go in for another round of trimming! As for the Bonsai artists... I cannot even begin to imagine accidentally lop off a branch that took years to grow, lol! Sounds like you are into Bonsai?
Guilty, @@InappropriateReefer! Like both of you, I have too many hobbies. Every respected bonsai practitioner has accidentally "destroyed" things that took years if not decades to grow. In some cases, centuries. One of the more famous bonsai artists out there tells a story about how he accidentally twisted off a major branch on a Japanese heritage bonsai tree during a demo (if I recall correctly). That branch had been on that tree for decades. If you work wild material, you can accidentally destroy things like deadwood that took centuries to form. Basically, you have to just roll with it. Not be negligent, but accept that sometimes, these things happen in the pursuit of a more aesthetic design for a tree. It's an "opportunity" for its ultimate design/shape.
Honored to be able to help you out. I remember watching the video when you first got this mangrove. Love the way it looks now, even with the happy accident. Can’t wait to see how you shape the canopy for the future! Happy Reefing.
Thank you again Tyler! I can't even tell it was cut now -- so much so that I am ready to do another round of trimming, lol. Will try not to accidentally cut off another big branch again........... looking forward to see how your Black Mangrove tank does!
Just bob ross it and it’s a happy mistakes
that was how I was trying to take it, lol! A few weeks later, it turned out pretty well!
What the other guy said about grabbing a drink^

yuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh IR vid. im down, lemme grab a drink.

Mangrove Mangrove Mangrove, you got me hooked sorry I can't help myself they're the best damn plant.
They are awesome!!
I just grabbed one today! Hopefully my ocean surgeon is nice
Cool, I just ordered that same 5lb jug of soda lime for air scrubbing my office. No more sleepy time for this guy!
Mr. Julian Sprung is the Godfather of Reefing in the USA. Ive been using his salt for the past 6 years with ZERO issues. It’s always on point with the claimed parameters.
What name was the substrate?
Wait is that an anemone next to the frogspawn?!
So just a wave maker can create enough oxygen to keep the corals and clowns alive? Sorry for the dumb question just tought a return pump is needed or a airstone
The zinc is what I see
You are so good at catching fish! LOL Can you come and catch my blenny? lol I lost my favorite gorgeous fish which believe it or not was a figi blue devil damsel! I though he was agressive but now I relize he wasnt at all for a damsel! I bought him as a baby and was last to go in, but he was alone for about a year and was aggresive towards other fish. Anyway i caught him and put in my sum and the day I go to get him to transfer to frag tank that just finished cycling he was dead :( I think it was from the water change day b4. It hit me hard! I loved that fish and I feel like i murdered him! Now I have a baby talsot which is in the top 3 least aggresive damsels and this baby is meaner then he was! If he wouldnt have died I probably would have put him back with the new fish and he would have been fine after a timeout! Actually thinking hard of getting another but might not be so lucky next time because he is considered an aggressive damsel! He would be one of the last to go in but want to get two more that I will get at same time because of shipping fees!
This is a great video showing what stops a tank in its tracks a year down the road
I followed your lead on the salt. I researched the salt and found out Jack Adam’s used to use this salt in the studio. I am not fully sold on reef crystal for my AWC and Julian said since the water is balanced we should not see any residue, that’s a plus.
I’ve had great success with peps removing Aiptasia, however they’ve now turned on my fireworks clove polyps and zoas 😢 Time to catch ‘em and move them to my shrimp city pico.
Looks like the prices have jumped a bit since this video, though your promo code still works! Was it described as a "wireless" monitor utilizing 2.4 GHz networks when you reviewed it? How has it help up?
😍💖
I've been looking to update the top cover of my Biocube to a mesh one. Any knowledge on where can I get one? Is a 32g Biocube. Thanks!
I started in this hobby in 2002 and everything I read about housing tangs was that you needed a six foot tank so they can have plenty of swimming space and that will cut down on their stress. Has this train of thought been changed for 2024?
Yea still true.
my understanding is tangs like hippo tang should ultimately be in at least a 6' tank, while tangs like yellow tang in 4'. My understanding could be a bit more old school though and things may have changed. Although I'm also in the camp of it being ok to house a younger/smaller tang in a smaller tank and slowly move them into larger tank too, versus the tank they go into being their final home.
You should leave a link to the trap! You are always catching fish! lol
Plus putting milk in mite not help bro hahaha
Vic is the GOAT
He is a wealth of knowledge from actual experience!
You really need to send out a aquabiomics test. You recently put some macro algae and peppermint shrimps in from algae barn. I know some of their stock comes from florida and florida reefs are plagued with stony coral tissue loss disease. Ive had the same disease( confirmed by aquabiomics) and i also noticed stuff looked better after water change but quickly reverted back to corals dying. If and when you do the test. Dose amoxicillin and cipro for 7 days
I'm pretty certain I have it. At the time of this writing most of the acros have already checked out unfortunately, not sure if it's still worth sending out the test. =(
@@InappropriateReefer its worth just dosing amoxicillin and cipro at 500 mg per 20 gallon . Do this at night out. Wont harm your fish. Might tick off your corals a little but i did it in my fluval evo 13.5 gallon at 500 mg of each per day. And nothing died. Seen a big improvement after that.
@@InappropriateReefer also. Try to avoid anything coming from florida or Caribbean at the moment. Going forward if you decide to do the treatment and things improve: dont remove bioballs or rock or sand from your aquarium. That will give any bad bacteria the chance to take hold since your good bacteria would decrease.
Water change!
Those tips you got are on point. You’ll enjoy the tank more if you clean the glass and keep your sand bed debris free.
Agreed!!
Coral that rtn release chemical might cause other coral to get upset or even corals feel attacked cause of it
I was given that advice as well -- appreciate the heads up!!
Do you have a 3-D printer, do you like it? I was thinking about getting one.
I have an Ender 3 and I was more a casual user. It was ~75% up time for me printing things as I had some issues getting things to stick to the plate, but while it was working it is pretty cool printing stuff. These days I hear Bambu is the value go-to and it's pretty much plug and play. I definitely recommend one if you see a lot of things that you would like to print, but if it's more from a cost-cutting perspective, I don't think you'd save much money printing things considering the cost of the unit + filament.
I have to printers, and I have an ender three and a I forgot the name of the other one I love them highly recommend
More water changes!! Less neglecting the tanks sand bed and should bounce right back! I do weekly 100g water changes on my 800g setup so picture that salt cost 😂
I have never vaccumed / stirred my sandbed, I'll be adding that to my cleaning routine! 100g a week? That's ~$80 a month! But hey, if you could afford a 800g reef tank set up, that's probably chump change. ;-)
Water change and dosing phyto really helps in my tank. Corals look happier.
Thanks for sharing your experience! May I ask what kind of phyto you're dosing and how often?
@@InappropriateReefer I buy from a reputable reefer from the reef2reef forum. Based on his description, it contains a blend of Tetraselmis, Nannochloropsis, Isochrysis, Thalassiosira weissflogii, Nannochloris, Chaetoceros calcitrans, Chlorella, Dunaliella (tertiolecta), and Pavlova. They’re very dark green and fresh, I dose 30 mL daily. I’ve tried not dosing for 6 months as an experiment and my corals were dull. Once I start dosing again, the color and puffiness is back. Could be a placebo effect but I now strongly believe phyto really do help in my experience.
A nice bit of forest fire digi would be nice to break up the colour a bit and not difficult to keep.
I like this idea, also am a fan of the Bubble Gum Monti as well!
@@InappropriateReefer yeah they're both nice! I've always felt forest fire is nicer as a colony and bubble gum as frags.
@@so_so_reef Interesting, I have always liked the bright pink skin; I'll have to look up some photos of a full bubble gum colony to see it's overall coloration!
Looks good for now and if it does get worse, a tank restart could be enjoyable. It’s nice to work out the kinks after enduring a few learning curves. Thanks for the update!
Oh it got worse, so far it seems to be isolated to the Acros, will have to see if this spread to the LPS / softies. Thank you for watching!
I want a copperband, but seems too risky with a clam.
I am with you, my main concern is the 3 clams I have, especially the 2 baby ones
His chicken analogy reminded me of how I explain reef tank differences to my clients....I simply tell them you are building a hot rod and no two hot rods are exactly the same....with testing you can tune your hot rod for your track conditions and success
I like it. 👍
My copperband butterfly ate acanthos, bubble coral, cynarinas, fox coral, and scolys. Before that he cleared the tank from aptasia that I had a problem with. I am sure he would eat a clam too :D
Lol, you are pretty patient with him to leave him in there as he sampled all your corals!
i been watching from almost the beginning i stared a saltwater tank cause of you
Awesome to see you still around and in the hobby! (and sorry for dragging you into this money pit, things weren't this expensive in the past, lol)
Thank you for your videos. I find them very helpful as I get back into the hobby.
Welcome back and thanks for watching!
Bro I've just started watching you over last week or so I've been watching your really old videos from like 1 to 4 years ago hahaha it just spin me out to see your tank now this is the frist time I've seen any off your newer videos hahaha I love your tanks and You knowledge is really good it really makes me want to try a reef tank so badly. And you are so entertaining to watch keep up the good work brother and I just noticed what happened to Purple tang??
Was wondering the same thing
Thanks for watching - can always try a smaller sized tank! I think I'd be comfortable with a 15g (if you're careful) or something under 40g to get a feel without breaking the bank. The Purple Tang did well for a few months and then showed up with torn fins one day, and disappeared within that week (pretty sure he passed away). My guess is the two tangs turned on him for whatever reason, which sucked, as I thought he integrated into the tang gang.
Ahh true that sucks bro that purple tang was amazing love the colours 😢 poor little fella. Okay thank you for heads up I mite try a small tank see how I do and if I do well maybe keep going haha
Awesome video man early gang!
Thanks for watching!
Update pretty please
